Biography

Ray Gionta enters his seventh season at the helm of the Tiger football program in 2009, amassing a 39-29 record in the previous five seasons. The class of 2008 will graduated Marple Newtown with the most victories at the varsity level in a four-year span (29). Under Gionta’s leadership, the program has had 5 winning seasons and 1 playoff appearance in the last six years.

In addition to the on-field success of the program, Gionta is also credited with helping form the Marple Newtown Football Alumni Association, developing a relationship with the local youth feeder programs and establishing a community relations outreach program.

Gionta also oversees the Tigers offensive unit, which averaged over 20 points per game during the ’06 & ’07 seasons. 2007 also saw the Tigers set the school record for most points in a game (62) against Lower Merion. Matt Moccia (2003-05) currently holds the Tigers school record for career rushing yardage with 2,900 yards.

The 2005 edition of the Fightin’ Tigers won 7 games for the second year in a row. The Tigers defeated Ridley for just the sixth time in school history, and also registered wins against Avon Grove, Lower Merion, Penncrest, Penn Wood, Radnor, Ridley and Springfield.

Gionta’s playing career was highlighted by a pair of Philadelphia Catholic League Southern Division Championships in 1969 and 1970. Following his junior season, Coach Gionta was named the St. James Most Improved Player and earned honorable mention All-Delco recognition. Under the direction of longtime Bulldog coach Joe Logue, Gionta anchored the ‘Dogs offensive and defensive lines. Gionta became the first player to be named All-Catholic on both sides of the ball in the same year.

A graduate of West Chester University and St. James High School, Gionta currently resides in Norwood, PA. He and his wife, Susan, have three children, Matt, Chris and Mark.
