Tigers win Sportsmanship Award

The Suburban Football Officials Association once again named Marple Newtown as the receipient of the annual Don Hoffmann Sportsmanship Award for the Central League.  The honor marks the fifth time in Coach Ray Gionta’s nine-year tenure that the program has been cited for exemplary sportsmanship and fair play.  Coach Gionta and Coach Lou D’Alonzo were present at the banquet to accept the award.
Following each game, After each game, the five man officiating crew votes on a scale of 1to 10 for the sportsmanship showed by each team that night.  There are nine games graded on this scale during the season.
They are looking not only  for the lack of unsportsmanlike behavior but acts of sportsmanship.  Players helping opposing players off the ground, returning the ball to the officials after each play, not talking to opponents and addressing the official with the proper respect are all areas looked at by the officials.  Finally, the sideline behavior of the team and coaching staff is taken into account by the officials each week.  The Marple Newtown Football Tigers received high marks for all of the above.
