Another Friday, another exciting game for Marple Newtown. After winning back-to-back nail-biters against Upper Darby and Radnor, the Tigers fell on Friday night, eight yards and a two-point conversion tie of pushing playoff-bound Springfield into overtime.
Springfield led 28-20 with just over two minutes left, but the Tigers put together a drive that died eight yards from pay-dirt. The drive was spurred by big runs by Anthony Rosanio and Austin DiFabio. Tommy Davis hit Joe Vegso on a fourth-and-three to give the Tigers four shots from the eight with just seconds remaining.
Davis and Vegso hooked-up in the second quarter to tie the game at 7-7. Davis was hurried on a fourth-and-ten conversion attempt from the Springfield 30-yard line. After buying additional time with a scramble, Davis was able to locate Vegso in the end zone to even the score.
On the ensuing drive, senior Craig Hamilton intercepted a Springfield screen pass and took it in for a score. MN hit the locker room ahead 14-7 at halftime, but Springfield answered with 14 straight points in the third and fourth quarter.
Marple Newtown went to the air again, as Davis hit Austin DiFabio for a long touchdown pass to pull within one point, 21-20. Springfield once again answered with a touchdown drive of their own, but left the Tigers offense enough time to move the ball down the field and attempt to tie the game.
The Tigers will close out the 2012 season against Penncrest on Friday, November 9 at Harry Harvey Field at 7P.
