This past Friday, the Marple Newtown community lost a beloved teacher in William “Murf” Murphy. Murf taught at Marple Newtown High School for the last 23 years and left a lasting impression on every student that came through his classroom door.

Murf not only taught woodshop at Marple Newtown High School as he also delved into technology, along with formerly coaching the Freshman Football Team and the Paxon Hollow Middle School squad. In addition, Murf assisted with the Stage Crew.

Murf was a favorite of many of his students, as he often greeted them with a one-liner upon entering his classroom.

Not only did Murf enjoy discussing his work, but he also loved talking about Philadelphia sports, most notably the Eagles and Phillies. Murf could always be counted on for a passionate discussion about Sunday’s Eagles game, or last night’s Phillies game.

Murf was the loving husband to his wife Janine, and father to his son James, who recently joined the coaching staff of the Marple Newtown High School baseball team.

Relatives and friends are invited to his visitations, Friday, January 25, 6:00-9:00 PM and Saturday, January 26, 10:00-11:30 AM at the Donahue Funeral Home located at 3300 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, Pa 19073. His funeral mass will take place at 12:00 PM on Saturday at St. Anastasia Church, located at 3301 West Chester Pike in Newtown Square.
