Joe Sweeley

Joe is a volunteer Assistant Coach with the Marple Newtown football program working with the wide receivers and defensive backs.

A graduate of Marple Newtown High School in 1987, Joe was a varsity member of the football, indoor, and outdoor track teams. During his athletic career at MN, Joe qualified for the PA State Indoor Track meet as the lead off runner for the sprint relay and was named to the Delaware County Hero Bowl All-Star game as a wide receiver.

Joe attended NCAA Division III Widener University where he was a three-year starter at wide receiver, kick returner and punt returner under legendary head coach Bill Manlove. Joe broke several school records in both football and track. As a senior wide receiver, Joe was named 1st Team All Middle Atlantic Conference, and 1st Team All East Coast Athletic Conference. He was a 4-year letter winner on both the Indoor and Outdoor Track teams and was named co-captain in 1990 and 1991. Joe was a three-time Middle Atlantic Conference Sprint Finalist in both the 55 meter and 100 meter dash and was inducted into the Widener University Athletic Wall Of Fame.

While at Widener, Joe worked out for the NFL Scouting Combine and signed as an NFL free agent wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1991. He played for the Eagles in the 1991 American Bowl against the Buffalo Bills at Wembley Stadium in London, England.

He was drafted into the World League of American Football (WLAF) in the spring of 1992.

He signed as a wide receiver in the Canadian Football League (CFL) with the Toronto Argonauts in 1992.

Joe, a 2014 inductee of the Marple Newtown Athletics Hall of Fame, is principal owner of an electrical engineering firm. He and his wife, Diane have two children: Elaina and Michael.
