After four quarters at Harry Harvey Field Friday night the Marple Newtown Tigers added a second win to their record by defeating the Lower Merion Aces by a score of 14 to 6. The Tigers (2-5) were able to capitalize on a turnover mid-way through the second quarter last night that shifted the momentum in their favor in front of a large crowd that was on hand for the Tigers’ Homecoming festivities.
The Aces opened the game with a long drive that landed them an early six points, but from then on out it was all Marple Newtown as they shutdown the Aces offense. The turning point of the game was when Junior Kevin Johnson intercepted a Lower Merion pass in the endzone for a touchback.
After the interception Johnson would then go on to help lead the Tigers’ offense down the field for a touchdown and a 7 to 6 lead. Johnson hit Tailback Nick Stephens in the back of the endzone on a 13 yard pass putting the Tigers ahead by one.
From that point on it was all Marple Newtown as they were able to move the ball on the ground using a trio of running backs including Senior Phil Graziano and Sophomore Mario Dioguardi. The Tigers defense also stood tall and shutout the Aces offense for the final three quarters.
Senior Defensive End Steve Reynolds recorded several tackles and a key sack late in the 3rd quarter of the game, preceded by two big stops by defensive tackle Joe Carini.  The Tigers would then score their second touchdown on the ground as Stephens ran the ball for a 3 yard touchdown giving him two total touchdowns Friday night.
Despite the tight score the Tigers’ controlled the game Friday and were able to dictate the pace of play and force the Aces into difficult offensive situation. The Tigers now have a 2 game winning streak heading into the seventh week of the season.
The Tigers will travel to Folsom, PA next Friday to take on the Ridley Green Raiders (6-1). Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Phil Marion Field. Coverage will be provided by www.marplenewtownfootball.com and eyeofthetigersblog.com.
