NEWTOWN SQUARE–Marple Newtown has gotten off to a 4-1 overall start and the Tigers are 3-1 in the Central League.
Marple Newtown doesn’t have to look too far for the reason for its success—defense.
The Tigers posted their third shutout this season, 49-0, over Lower Merion and stopped the Aces’ dangerous tailback, Ernest Pendleton, last weekend.
A more specific cause is the play up front of Tony Desiderio, Chris Kurkian, Ken Smith and Corey Power. Add in the play of athletic linebackers, likeRyan Furst, and defensive back Joey Pham and this unit can cause problems for opposing teams.
“We’re putting guys where they’re good, our defensive line does a very good job, and it starts with them,” Pham said.
He continued, “By putting pressure on quarterback, we’re all in a better position to make plays. We have guys that move well. That’s the been the key for us. We’re not very big, but we use our speed.”
