NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA – The Marple Newtown Board of School Directors has announced that Sean Spratt has been named the head basketball coach.

Earlier tonight, the Marple Newtown School District board of directors approved Spratt’s hiring for the 2016 basketball season.

He succeeds Brian Shane, who spent the past three seasons at helm for the Tigers. Eric Houck stepped in as the interim coach during the 2015-16 campaign when Shane took a leave of absence for health reasons.

A Broomall native and current resident, Spratt has been a basketball assistant for Marple Newtown and most recently for head coach Michael Doyle of Penncrest High School. Spratt helped the Lions qualify for the PIAA state tournament this past season.

The 2006 graduate of Marple Newtown is a former multi-sport athlete for the Tigers who excelled in football, basketball, and baseball.

In his senior campaign, he received an All-Delco Honorable Mention for football (All-Purpose) after leading the squad in receptions.

When asked about being named the new head basketball coach at his alma mater Sean said he was “very excited and looking forward to getting back with the program after three years.”

In terms of future goals for the basketball team Spratt has a clear vision for Marple Newtown. “One of my big goals is to make it a community program in the Marple and Newtown townships and to get the communities excited about Marple Newtown basketball. I want to build a program starting with the youth that will carry over to the high school. This is how you build a strong varsity program.”

Prior to coming to Marple Newtown High School as a ninth grade student, Spratt attended St. Anastasia in Newtown Square, PA.

After Marple Newtown, Spratt went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in physical education from West Chester University.

Spratt is currently in his third year as a health and physical education teacher at the Springton Lake Middle School in the Rose Tree Media School District.
